The weather is getting warmer, flowers are starting to bloom and people across the country are taking some time to participate in the time-honored tradition of spring cleaning. Like your basement, garage or closet, your social media channels can easily become cluttered throughout the year, spring is the perfect time to get back on track.
Not unlike the Marie Kondo Method of organization, if you have social media content that doesn’t meet your current needs or brand standards, throw it out. As your company or organization grows and adapts to new markets, previous branding and messaging may no longer apply. Clearing your social media channels of outdated or irrelevant content, such as limited-time promotions, is a good practice as potential clients and customers might expect you to honor those promotions as long as they are listed on your page. It might also be a good idea to remove underperforming posts. Maybe your #Kony2012 tweets aren’t aging well, or your topical meme didn’t go viral like you thought it would – that’s okay, just delete it.
Before you completely trash all of your old promotions or underperforming posts, keep a record of the content. Just because a post might not have worked well on Instagram, that doesn’t mean it won’t have more success on Facebook or LinkedIn; repurposing content can save you a lot of time and effort.
You likely had your 2020 marketing strategy ready to go in January. Take some time to review your posts and page analytics to see if you are meeting your goals. It’s good practice to revisit your social media goals throughout the year to keep yourself and your team accountable. If you aren’t getting the engagement you were aiming for, now is the time to change your strategy.
Now that you have the tools to clean up your social media, also schedule some time throughout the remainder of the year to audit your social media channels. You can confidently enjoy the season knowing that your social media pages are decluttered and you’re on the right track to meeting your goals.
